In this article, we give you all the essentials for choosing the right Field&Fish waterproof fishing jacket.
Why is a waterproof, breathable jacket essential?
How many fishing trips have been ruined by cold and waterproofing problems? Whether it's autumn in a reservoir or spring in heavy showers, opt for perfect insulation. A waterproof, breathable jacket with a GoreTex waterproof membrane is ideal. This membrane imitates the skin.
By being perfectly insulated from the wind and rain, you'll be able to keep on fishing while your mates have already gone home. You can also add a garment underneath forthermal comfort (an inflatable vest, for example, as air is the best insulator), fleece or any other synthetic material that can trap air in its fibers.
When is a jacket considered waterproof?
Most brands will tell you that a fabric is waterproof above 3,000 mm, but Field and Fish's minimum is 5,000 mm. The fabric is subjected to 5m of water pressure before a drop of water appears. The best-performing jackets go up to 30,000 mm. These materials will also totally insulate you from the often unpleasant wind .
Should I choose a fabric with a membrane or a coating?
Coated fabric:
A layer of polyurethane is applied to the fabric with a squeegee to block the pores. The result is a fabric that's not very waterproof (around 3,000 mm) and breathable. Most inexpensivewaterproof jackets use a coating.
Goretex membrane fabric:
The membrane is sandwiched and laminated between the outer fabric and the inner lining. This manufacturing process gives your waterproof garment lightness, strength and rigidity. We call this 3/4/5-layer construction, or 2.5 for very light waterproof jackets.
Uncompromising waterproofness (20,000 mm) is breathability enough for sport fishermen. Many breathable waders use this process.
Why do 3/4/5-layer products cost more?
The construction of a 3-layer laminate garment is extremely precise and technical. The aim is to provide optimum protection against the elements, so every detail counts. Cutting the fabric, heat-bonding strips on the seams, technical hoods, tightening points... All these manufacturing elements, specific to membrane fabrics, must be carefully executed to obtain a truly technical garment. This in turn requires a greater investment than single- or double-layer coatings.
Field and Fish's specifications for a men's breathable waterproof jacket
Our aim is to protect the angler while ensuring comfort and technicality. To achieve this, we use :
- the Waders membrane (20,000 mm) for waterproofing and 5,000 gr/m2/24h for breathability on a 3-layer fabric base for greater flexibility
- large pockets with precise velcro or watertight zipper closures (YKK)
- Practical vertical pockets to accommodate large boxes
- snap-adjustable gussets on pockets
- warm hand-rest pockets
- hood with rigid, depth-adjustable visor and landing net hook
- adjustable inner or outer cuffs along the entire length of the flap to avoid catching the silk and release the fish without wetting the forearm
- large inside pockets
- an inner gaiter to protect against wind and moisture, known as a snow guard, on ski jackets
- all adjustment cords are inside and do not protrude when adjusted
