Pike fishing is becoming more democratic with the advent of ever more efficient equipment. Here's some information to help you tackle this exciting fishery.
Why?
Because the pike is a magnificent and very aggressive fish. Seeing the pike rise on your fly and feeling the touch directly in your hands will leave you with unforgettable memories.
Because the pike is a "big" and powerful fish and will give you epic battles on a rod as supple as a fly rod.
One reason is that pike are relatively abundant in our waters and it will be easy to practice close to home.
The latter is due to the fact that pike can be caught almost all year round.
How?
The power of your tackle will depend on the size of the flies you wish to cast. The big fly, big fish rule applies just as well to pike!
To get you started, we recommend the following set:
- Rod #7/8
- Reel # 7/8
- Floating silk WF8F
- An intermediate tip and a plunge tip (to vary depth and fishing animation)
- 50m backing
- Leader: 2m of 40/100 + a 70/100 tip
- Tie for large streamers. We recommend this model for its strength and ease of changing flies: https: //www.ardentflyfishing.com/rio-twist-clip-p-74619
Mastering the double pull will be essential to send your fly a minimum of distance. Practice in your garden 😉
Flies:
- " realistic ": natural colors
- " fantastic ": flashy colors
- Surface flies: an imitation rat or frog will do the trick...
We advise you to use the first type of streamer before the second so as not to "spook" fussy fish.
However, it's the second choice that often proves the most productive.
When?
All season long. However, avoid the spawning season, which generally runs from early February to late April.
Where?
Many areas in France are currently populated by pike. For fly-fishing, prefer shallow water.
With whom?
There are many references to help you fly-fish for pike, but we prefer the Swedish Niklaus Bauer, a specialist in the field.
His many videos will make your mouth water and help you with practice and fly tying.
You can find all his videos on youtube: https: //www.youtube.com/results?search_query=niklaus+bauer
